Thirty five years of experience at Seton Hall University has enabled EOP to identify numerous techniques that work or do not work in bringing the EOP population closer to the academic mainstream. This model program advocates the following advisement process as a result of having access to its population from the moment students are enrolled in the Program.
EOP’s academic advisement process is undergirded by a series of assessment measurements which identify the mathematical, English, reading, critical and analytical thinking skills, and personal and financial status of each student. As a result, EOP is able to utilize a holistic approach to advisement.
Dual Advising
The Educational Opportunity Program initiates the academic advisement process.
All students, freshmen through seniors, must first contact their Student
Development Specialist to complete a registration grid and an Alternative Course
Form, and to obtain the required signature and Program stamp of approval. After
EOP’s approval, the students are directed to their respective departmental
advisers (upperclass students) or Freshman Studies Mentor (first year students).
In the event the department adviser has any questions regarding the approved EOP
form, the adviser contacts the Student Development Specialist who has approved
the registration grid and Alternative Course Form. In addition to primary
advisement, the Educational Opportunity Program attends meetings and workshops
with the various schools at the University so that EOP is constantly aware of
any changes that might impact the academic development and career preparedness
of its students.
These advisement procedures are also utilized with other programs in which EOP students participate, including the Honors Program, Freshman Studies and Student Athlete Advising.
