All students with fewer than thirty credits are advised by the advisers in the Freshman Studies Program located in Mooney Hall. Some university programs require dual advisement with the Freshman Studies adviser serving as the secondary adviser.
Upon enrollment at the university, you will be assigned a Freshman Studies adviser based on your major. You will have an opportunity to meet with your adviser at your New Student (or Transfer) Orientation to review your class schedule for your first semester. At that time you may discuss the requirements of your program and any questions or concerns that you might have. You will then receive your PIN which will give you access to your schedule (if you have dual advising, your primary adviser will have your PIN).
You may meet with your adviser throughout the year however you are required to meet with him/her to plan your schedule for the next semester and to receive your new PIN so that you may register. You will continue to be advised through Freshman Studies until you have completed thirty credits. Upon completion of those thirty credits you will receive a letter from Freshman Studies telling you who your new adviser will be. Your adviser will now be someone from your major department or, if you are pre major, someone from the School of Arts and Sciences’ Deans’ Office. If you have any questions about this, you may come to the Freshman Studies’ office in Mooney Hall.
Dual Advisement
In some cases, a student will have more than one assigned adviser. The purpose
of this dual advisement is not only to insure that a student meets academic
requirements but also to insure that any special needs are addressed. Students
participating in the following University programs require dual advisement:
Educational Opportunity Program, Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program, Student
Athlete Advisement, College of Education and Human Services students, and
freshmen.
