Academic advisement is mandatory for all Seton Hall University students. Freshmen at Seton Hall are advised through Freshman Studies by mentors who are assigned to the students at New Student Orientation. Freshman Studies Department is located in Mooney Hall and students who are uncertain about who their adviser is may seek assistance in Mooney Hall, Room 12.
During fall and spring pre-registration periods all students must meet with their Freshman Studies mentors or, for upperclassmen, their academic adviser within their major. Freshmen may go to Mooney Hall, Room 12, to make an appointment with their mentor.
Upperclassmen and transfer students who are uncertain about their academic adviser should go to their major department for guidance and adviser assignment. Pre-art and Pre-science majors who have earned 30+ credits should go to the Dean’s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences (Fahy Hall, 1st floor) for an appointment.
During fall and spring pre-registration periods, you must meet with a department adviser, and the adviser provides you with your PIN (which will allow you to register on Web for Students). Advisers ask that you prepare for your appointment by reviewing the requirements for your major and by drafting a tentative course schedule.
Dual Advising
In some cases, a student will have more than one assigned adviser.
The purpose of this dual advisement is not only to insure that a student
meets academic requirements but also to insure that any special needs
are addressed. Students participating in the following University
programs require dual advisement:
- Educational Opportunity Program
- Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program
- Student Athlete Advisement
- College of Education and Human Services students
- Disability Support Services Policy on Advisement
PIN Numbers and Dual Advising
Freshman Studies gives out PINs to all freshmen except EOP students
and Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus (PMPDPP) students.
Sophomores-seniors who participate in dual advising would get their pin
from the adviser in their primary major: for example, Education majors
receive their PIN numbers from their adviser in the College of Education
and Human Services. The exception to this is ATHLETES, EOP and PMPDPP -- they
always get their PIN from their assigned adviser in that area.
Transfer Credits for Course Work at Other Institutions
Students at Seton Hall may take elective credit at another university.
Up to twelve (12) elective credits may be taken at another institution
with approval. Courses in the core and in the academic majors must be
taken at Seton Hall with some exception for study abroad and other
exceptional circumstances that are approved by the academic chair and
the associate dean in the Colleges.
Students must complete the form giving permission to take classes at another university PRIOR to taking the course. The forms are available in Bayley Hall and must be signed by the Seton Hall chair of the department that the course would be taught from, the student’s adviser and department chair and the dean of the college.
Switching Majors
If you are thinking about changing your major, you must meet with the
chair of the department that you would like to join. Some majors at Seton
Hall are highly competitive and require certain foundational coursework
and/or a specific grade point average. Students who meet these requirements
must have the department chair and college dean sign a Curriculum Adjustment
Form, which is available in Bayley Hall.
