Probation, Suspension and Dismissal

Full-Time Student Probation Policy

Full-time students are required to:

1. Complete successfully at least 24 credits in each 12 months of full-time registration; and
2. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 1.75 for freshmen, 1.90 for sophomores and 2.0 for juniors and seniors.

Students whose cumulative GPAs are below the minimum and/or have not completed 24 credits in 12 months are automatically placed on probation for the current semester.

All students will receive written notification from the Dean’s Office to confirm this status. The status is also revealed in a student’s degree audit accessible with a current pin number.

Students are required to meet with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academics (Dr. Christopher Kaiser, Room 130, Dean's Suite, Fahy Hall) for consultation and to have considered completed an academic waiver necessary to register in for the next semester.

Students placed on probation are recommended to construct a ‘student academic contract’ with the Associate Dean.

Students that fail to meet the requirements of the ‘academic contract’ will be suspended from the University. The resulting decision will be communicated to the student in writing.

Students will be considered for Suspension from Seton Hall if they have not met the minimum GPA requirement of a 2.0 for 2 or more semesters.
The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academics may waive suspension with a written letter to the Registrar.

Students will be considered for Dismissal from Seton Hall if they have not met the minimum GPA requirement of a 2.0 for 3 or more semesters.
The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academics may waive dismissal with a written letter to the Registrar.

Dismissal constitutes permanent expulsion from the University.

Suspension constitutes removal from the University for a stipulated period of time.

Any student who believes that a decision made over academic suspension or dismissal may appeal the Associate Dean’s decision to the Provost, according to the established University grievance procedures.
