THE MINORITY ACADEMIC
CAREERS PROGRAM FELLOWSHIPS
The Minority Academic Careers Program (MAC), created by the State of New Jersey
in 1985, provides financial and programmatic assistance to economically
disadvantaged New Jersey resident doctoral candidates and undergraduates who are
interested in pursuing academic careers. The MAC program is comprised of
Undergraduate Fellowships, Doctoral Fellowships and Dissertation Fellowships.
Since the inception of the MAC Program, it has offered financial and
programmatic support to over 400 doctoral and undergraduate students and faculty
across the state. The MAC Program is overseen by the New Jersey Commission
on Higher Education and is administered by the College of Saint Elizabeth.
The MAC Undergraduate Fellowship Program
The MAC-Undergraduate Program is a
statewide initiative to encourage academically talented undergraduates to
consider college teaching as a profession. It is considered a pipeline to
the doctoral fellowship program, and all MAC undergraduate fellows will be given
priority consideration for doctoral fellowships if they attend doctoral programs
in New Jersey. Undergraduate fellows are selected in the fall of their
junior year. They begin their Fellowship in the spring term of their junior
year and continue through the two semesters of their senior year. MAC-UG Fellows
receive a $2,000.00 stipend during their senior year, and up to $500.00 in
travel expenses to attend professional conferences. They work with a
faculty mentor who receives a $1000.00 stipend. To be eligible for the
fellowship applicants must be New Jersey residents who meet the criteria for
economic disadvantagement, juniors in college, enrolled full-time in a college or
university in New Jersey, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and be interested in a
college teaching career.
The MAC Doctoral Level Fellowships
The MAC Program offers two types of support on the doctoral level. The
MAC Doctoral Fellowship supports students during three years of course work and
the MAC Dissertation Fellowships are for one year. Fellowships up to
$17,000.00 a year, plus $1,000.00 a year for mentoring support and $2,000.00 a
year for the fellow and mentor to attend a national conference or to pursue
other related professional development activities. MAC doctoral level
fellows who receive all four years of doctoral level support may receive up to
$80,000.00 in the various types of fellowship support. Additionally, the
MAC Program pays $3,000.00 for doctoral fellows to join the Compact for Faculty
Diversity and attend the annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring.
Doctoral and Dissertation Fellowship recipients are nominated by doctoral
institutions in New Jersey who agree to provide additional financial, mentoring
and academic support services to the fellows.
